TEMPERANCE

⚖️ Temperance — One of God’s Foundational Laws of Health

Temperance is one of the most neglected yet most important principles of healthy living. In a world driven by appetite, pleasure, excess, addiction, impulse, and instant gratification, the principle of temperance calls us back to balance, self-control, moderation, and wise stewardship of both body and mind.

True temperance does not merely mean avoiding drunkenness or obvious harmful habits. It is a much broader principle that affects nearly every area of life — eating, drinking, sleeping, working, entertainment, emotions, speech, desires, spending, technology use, and even religious practices. Temperance teaches us to use wisely what is good and avoid entirely what is harmful.

At its core, temperance is the principle of self-government under God.

🌿 What Is Temperance?

Temperance may be simply defined as:
• moderation in that which is good
• abstinence from that which is harmful

The human body functions best in balance. Nearly every harmful habit involves excess, imbalance, or lack of restraint. Whether it is overeating, overworking, oversleeping, excessive screen time, sugar addiction, stimulants, alcohol, lust, anger, entertainment addiction, or continual stress, imbalance gradually weakens both body and mind.

Even good things may become harmful when used without wisdom or moderation.

Temperance therefore is not about harsh restriction or joyless living, but about preserving clarity, strength, peace, health, and self-control.

🧠 Temperance Protects the Mind

One of the greatest benefits of temperance is mental clarity. Excess weakens judgment. Intemperance clouds the mind, weakens self-control, dulls spiritual sensitivity, and often leads people into decisions they later regret.

Many addictive substances and behaviors overstimulate the brain temporarily while weakening it long-term. Excess sugar, alcohol, drugs, gambling, constant entertainment, endless scrolling, and overstimulation may all affect the brain’s reward systems and gradually reduce discipline, concentration, emotional stability, and peace of mind.

Temperance helps preserve:
• clear thinking
• emotional balance
• self-control
• better judgment
• healthier habits
• stronger willpower
• spiritual sensitivity

A disciplined mind is often a freer and healthier mind.

🍽️ Temperance in Eating

One of the most common forms of intemperance involves appetite. Many diseases today are linked not merely to what people eat, but to excess eating, continual snacking, emotional eating, processed foods, and lack of moderation.

Even wholesome food may become harmful when consumed excessively. Overeating burdens digestion, weakens energy, contributes to weight gain, and may place continual stress upon the organs of the body.

Temperance in eating includes:
• moderation in quantity
• regular meal habits
• avoiding continual snacking
• reducing highly processed foods
• avoiding excessive sugar and stimulants
• eating slowly and mindfully
• listening to the body’s natural signals

The goal of eating should not merely be pleasure or indulgence, but nourishment, strength, and health.

🚭 Avoiding Harmful Substances

True temperance also includes abstaining from substances known to harm the body and mind.

Alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, vaping products, and many addictive substances damage health while impairing judgment and self-control. Many modern addictions gradually enslave the mind and body while promising temporary relief or pleasure.

The body was not designed to depend upon continual artificial stimulation.

Many people today also rely heavily upon:
• caffeine
• sugar
• energy drinks
• processed foods
• medications used unnecessarily
• constant digital stimulation

While not every substance affects every person equally, the principle of temperance encourages careful discernment and wise stewardship over what we allow to control the body or mind.

📱 Temperance in Modern Life

Temperance is increasingly important in the digital age. Modern society encourages constant stimulation — endless entertainment, social media, noise, advertising, gaming, streaming, notifications, and distraction.

Many people no longer know how to rest quietly, think deeply, or live calmly because the mind is continually overstimulated.

Excessive technology use may contribute to:
• anxiety
• poor concentration
• sleep problems
• emotional exhaustion
• addictive behavior
• reduced attention span
• social isolation

Temperance teaches balance. Technology itself is not necessarily evil, but without self-control it may easily dominate life and weaken mental and spiritual health.

😴 Temperance in Work and Rest

Even work may become unhealthy when out of balance. Some people destroy their health not through laziness, but through continual overwork, stress, anxiety, and lack of rest.

The body requires balance between:
• labor and rest
• activity and recovery
• productivity and quietness

Many people today live in continual exhaustion because they ignore the body’s need for proper sleep, recreation, exercise, fresh air, and mental rest.

Temperance reminds us that health is preserved not only by avoiding harmful things, but also by living in balanced harmony with the natural laws of the body.

❤️ Temperance and Emotional Self-Control

Temperance also applies to the emotions. Uncontrolled anger, bitterness, lust, jealousy, fear, anxiety, and emotional extremes may greatly affect physical and mental health.

A temperate spirit seeks calmness, balance, patience, and self-control rather than continual emotional impulsiveness.

This does not mean suppressing emotions unnaturally, but learning to govern them wisely rather than allowing emotions to govern us.

Inner peace, contentment, and emotional discipline are deeply connected to overall well-being.

🙏 Temperance Is a Spiritual Principle

The Bible presents temperance as not merely a physical principle, but also a spiritual fruit of a life surrendered to God.

📖 Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”

Temperance is closely connected to self-control. A person ruled continually by appetite, impulse, addiction, lust, anger, or excess often struggles to maintain spiritual clarity and stability.

Scripture repeatedly warns against drunkenness, gluttony, laziness, and uncontrolled living because these things gradually weaken both character and judgment.

📖 1 Corinthians 9:25 (NKJV)
“And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things…”

The Christian life involves discipline, balance, self-government, and surrender to higher principles rather than slavery to appetite or impulse.

🌱 Temperance Brings Freedom

Many people think temperance means restriction, but true temperance actually brings freedom.

A person controlled by addiction, impulse, uncontrolled appetite, anger, lust, or continual excess is not truly free. Real freedom is the ability to govern oneself wisely rather than being ruled by harmful desires or habits.

Temperance protects:
• health
• peace of mind
• relationships
• judgment
• finances
• emotional stability
• spiritual life

It helps preserve the body and mind so they may function more clearly, peacefully, and effectively.

🙏 Returning to Balance and Simplicity

Modern culture constantly pushes people toward excess — more consumption, more stimulation, more entertainment, more indulgence, more busyness, and more distraction. Yet the body and mind were designed to thrive in balance, simplicity, moderation, and self-control.

Temperance teaches us to live thoughtfully rather than impulsively, wisely rather than excessively, and peacefully rather than compulsively.

Balanced eating, proper rest, moderate work, healthy recreation, controlled emotions, wise use of technology, and avoidance of harmful substances all work together to preserve health and strengthen character.

True temperance is not merely about avoiding harmful habits — it is about living in harmony with the principles of life, health, wisdom, and self-control that God designed for human flourishing.

“In order to preserve health, temperance in all things is necessary – temperance in labour, temperance in eating and drinking.” How to Live, pg.57 (Ellen G. White)

“True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful, and to use judiciously that which is healthful.” The Faith I Live by, pg. 231. (Ellen G. White)

Overeating
“Indulging in eating too frequently, and in too large quantities, overtaxes the digestive organs, and produces a feverish state of the system. The blood becomes impure, and then diseases of various kinds occur.” Facts of Faith p133.

Lack of Exercise
“Neglecting to exercise the entire body, or a portion of it, will bring on morbid conditions. Inaction of any of the organs of the body will be followed by a decrease in size and strength of the muscles, and will cause the blood to flow sluggishly through the blood vessels. The blood is not enabled to expel the impurities as it would if active circulation were induced by exercise.” 2 Testimonies p529.

Tobacco
“Tobacco is a poison of the most deceitful and malignant kind, having an exciting, then a paralyzing influence upon the nerves of the body. It is all the more dangerous because its effects upon the system are so slow, and at first scarcely perceivable.” Facts of Faith p128.
“Tobacco is a slow, insidious poison, and its effects are more difficult to cleanse from the system than those of liquor.” 3 Testimonies p569.
Modern science today has identified many chemical poisons in tobacco.

Liquor
“The use of tobacco encourages the appetite for liquor; and the use of tobacco and liquor invariably lessen nerve power.” Ibid p488.
Alcohol destroys brain cells because it clogs the blood, and oxygen (brain food) cannot get to brain cells fast enough.

Tea and Coffee
“Tea has an influence to excite the nerves, and coffee benumbs the brain; both are highly injurious.” 4 Testimonies p365. (Both tea and coffee contain caffeine, a stimulant. Many herb teas do not contain caffeine. Tea also contains the poison tannin. Many herbs teas do not. Coca Cola, Fanta and other soft drinks contain a large amount of caffeine. Diet Coca Cola and other diet soft drink also contain a deadly poison, Aspartane.

Sugar (Especially Refined White Sugar)
“Sugar clogs the system. It hinders the working of the living machinery.” — 2 Testimonies, p. 369.

(Be very careful when using artificial sweeteners, as many contain aspartame. Use coconut sugar, stevia, or raw honey instead.)

Salt
“Do not eat largely of salt.” Counsels on Health p120. (Use only Celtic Sea Salt or Himalayan Salt)

Condiments and Spices
“After the immediate effects are gone, those who use the condiments and spices drop as far below normal as they were elevated above normal by these stimulating substances. The system is weakened, the blood contaminated, and inflammation is the sure result.” Unpublished manuscript No.5.1896. (Cayenne is not included in the harmful spices, as it is the only stimulant without a harmful effect)
