What Happens When We Die?

Many are always seeking answers about death. What happens when you die? Do some soar to heaven while others descend to hell? Is there a holding place called “purgatory”? Do we enter the spirit world? What about reincarnation? Might I return as an eagle? Can the living actually communicate with the dead, and do the dead haunt the house they used to live in?

The truth about death can be found only in the Bible. Book of Revelation says, “Satan deceives the whole world” (Revelation 12:9), thus we cannot expect the majority of humanity to be right about spiritual matters.

🌬️ What is the Spirit and Soul?

The spirit and soul are greatly misunderstood by many people, yet the Bible gives clear definitions.

Body + Spirit = Living Soul.

Put simply, the spirit is basically the breath of life from God. Both the Greek and Hebrew words translated “spirit” can mean “breath,” “wind,” or “air.” The Greek word pneuma is reflected in words like pneumatic tools or pneumatic tyres—things powered or filled with air.

A soul is simply a living, breathing being or person. When people say, “There wasn’t a soul there,” they simply mean there was nobody there. In Scripture, the soul is not an immortal ghost living inside the body—it is the living person himself.

🌱 In the Beginning

• Genesis 2:7 — God formed Adam into “a living soul.”
• Genesis 2:16–17 — God warned that if Adam sinned, he would “surely die.”
• Genesis 3:4 — The serpent said, “You will not surely die.”
• Genesis 3:19 — Because of sin, man returns to dust.
• Ecclesiastes 12:7 — Death is creation in reverse: the body returns to dust and the spirit (breath of life) returns to God.
• Job 27:3 — The spirit of God in man refers to the breath of life, not a conscious being living in the nose.
• Genesis 3:22–24 — God prevented sinners from eating of the tree of life and living forever.
• Genesis 5:5 — After Adam lived 930 years, “he died.”

⚰️ The Soul is Not Immortal

🕊️ Jesus’ Own Words About the Resurrection

“Behold, the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice, and come forth, they that have done good, to the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation.”
—Jesus Christ (John 5:28–29)

So far the Bible has shown that when a person dies, he is unconscious in the grave until the resurrection at Christ’s return. Yet some verses are often misunderstood as teaching immediate entrance into heaven. Let us examine them carefully in harmony with the rest of Scripture.

✝️ The Thief on the Cross — Luke 23:42–43

When the thief asked Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom,” the interpretation of Christ’s response depends upon the placement of a comma—a punctuation mark added centuries later and not inspired.

Did Jesus say:

“I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise”

or:

“I say to you today, you will be with Me in paradise”?

One translation renders it this way:
Luke 23:43 TS98 — “Truly, I say to you today, you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

This harmonizes with the rest of Scripture because Jesus Himself later said to Mary after His resurrection:
“I have not yet ascended to My Father.” (John 20:17)

If Jesus had not yet ascended to Paradise on Sunday morning, then the thief could not have been there with Him on Friday.

🏔️ What About Moses and Elijah? — Luke 9:27–36

On the Mount of Transfiguration appeared Moses and Elijah.

Elijah never died; he was translated alive into heaven (2 Kings 2:11). Moses did die and was buried (Deuteronomy 34:5–6), yet Jude 1:9 reveals Michael disputed with Satan over Moses’ body, implying Moses was resurrected.

Thus, this was not proof of conscious spirits of the dead, but two literal living men—one resurrected and one translated.

🔮 Saul, Samuel, and the Witch of Endor — 1 Samuel 28

Did Saul truly speak with Samuel after Samuel’s death? Scripture indicates otherwise.

Saul, abandoned by God because of rebellion, turned to a witch possessing a “familiar spirit” — a demonic spirit. Satan can appear as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), so a demon impersonating Samuel is entirely possible.

Several clues expose the deception:

• Saul himself did not see Samuel directly.
• The spirit supposedly came “up” from the earth, reflecting pagan beliefs about the dead.
• God had already forbidden communication with familiar spirits.
• A holy prophet would not appear through a forbidden séance conducted by a witch.

Thus, the apparition was not Samuel, but a demonic impersonation designed to deceive Saul.

🌟 Conclusion

The Bible consistently teaches that death is an unconscious sleep until the resurrection at the return of Jesus Christ. The dead are not roaming the earth, communicating with the living, or existing as immortal disembodied souls. Eternal life belongs only to God and is granted to believers through Christ at the resurrection.

Satan’s very first lie was, “You shall not surely die,” and that deception continues today through spiritualism, ghost beliefs, ancestor worship, séances, and false teachings about the dead.

But Scripture points us to a blessed hope—not immediate life after death, but the glorious resurrection when Christ returns and calls His sleeping saints from the grave.
