God’s Design for Women
God has a purpose for every life, and that divine purpose extends to marriage. Revelation 4:11 affirms that all were created for God’s pleasure, and true fulfillment comes from living according to His design. Much sorrow and confusion in relationships would be avoided if it were recognized that Satan—not another human being—is the true adversary. Victory is found in a restored relationship with the Divine Architect.
A Divine “Not Good”
Before sin entered the world, God declared one thing “not good”: man’s solitude (Genesis 2:18–20). Though the world was filled with beauty and perfection, God saw that man needed a companion—someone suited to share in responsibility, to understand, love, and support him in fulfilling the divine plan. Even communion with angels could not fulfill man’s desire for companionship. He needed one of his own kind to love and be loved.
"Man was not made to dwell in solitude… There was no one of the same nature to love and to be loved." — Conflict and Courage, 14.2
God's answer was Eve—the first woman and the first wife. She was not an afterthought, but the divine solution to a divine need. Together, Adam and Eve were whole, complete, and purposeful.
The High Calling of Helper
This is the calling of the daughters of Eve. Sadly, worldly traditions have distorted this role. Many view the term “help meet” as a demotion, equating it with servitude or lesser value. Society often portrays helpers as those lacking success or authority. But this is not God's intent.
Being a helper does not denote inferiority. Rather, it reflects a sacred partnership. God designed woman to be a companion who strengthens, supports, and uplifts. The husband may be the head, but the helper enables him to carry out his duties more effectively. There is no loss of dignity in fulfilling a role that aligns with God’s higher purpose.
"Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor of the Lord." — Proverbs 18:22
A wife is a divine gift, created to fulfill a specific role. That role—helping, strengthening, and enriching her husband—is a blessing, not a burden.
God's Design, Not Man’s Distortion
The divine plan has been distorted. Satan has worked tirelessly to confuse gender roles, blur divine order, and disrupt the peace God designed for homes. In doing so, he seeks to bring the same chaos into the world that he attempted to introduce in heaven.
Marriage is God's institution, ordained at creation and celebrated by the Creator Himself. Alongside the Sabbath, it is one of the two institutions carried out of Eden. When God's principles govern the marriage covenant, it becomes a blessing, enriching life physically, intellectually, and spiritually.
"Marriage is honorable... it guards the purity and happiness of the race..." — Faith I Live By, 251.4
The woman was created as a precious gift to man, suited for his needs, and entrusted with a role that brings glory to God. To love, honor, and support a husband according to God’s will is to fulfill a purpose for which woman was created.
"...She that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband." — 1 Corinthians 7:34
This role is not dependent on the husband’s merit. Godly obedience is not contingent upon whether the other party is deserving. Fulfillment comes not from comparison or competition, but from functioning in alignment with one’s created nature.
A Sacred Ministry in the Home
The home is the first and most vital mission field. A wife and mother has a sacred ministry—to shape character, train children, and set a godly example through patience, kindness, and firmness. She has the privilege to create an atmosphere where God’s presence is felt.
“Seek constantly to improve your powers to do the most perfect, thorough work at home… by precept and example.” — Testimonies on Sexual Behavior, 40.2
Marriage is intended to be the most intimate, tender, and sacred tie on earth. Entered into in the fear of God, with a clear sense of its responsibilities, it brings security, fulfillment, and joy.
Living to Please God
To live a life that pleases God is the ultimate aim. His Word provides clear guidelines, and by embracing instruction that aligns with Scripture—especially that which humbles the self and exalts Christ—believers walk in harmony with divine purpose.
God still calls His daughters to rise to their calling. Regardless of past failures, God offers grace and strength for those willing to surrender and walk in His will.
