Becoming Like Little Children
Matthew 18:1–4 (NKJV)
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’
Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’”
The disciples came to Jesus asking about greatness. Their minds were still influenced by earthly thinking—positions, honor, authority, and recognition. But Jesus completely reversed their understanding of greatness. Instead of pointing to a mighty king, a learned scholar, or a powerful leader, He called a little child and placed the child in the center.
This was a profound lesson. In God’s kingdom, greatness is not measured by status, popularity, influence, titles, or self-exaltation. True greatness is measured by humility, purity of heart, childlike faith, and dependence upon God.
Jesus even says something deeper: unless we are converted and become like little children, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven at all. This shows that humility is not merely an optional Christian virtue—it is foundational to salvation and spiritual life.

🌱 What Does It Mean to Become Like a Little Child?
Jesus is not teaching childishness, immaturity, or lack of wisdom. Rather, He points to the beautiful qualities often found in sincere children.
🤍 1. Childlike Humility
Children usually do not spend their lives seeking status or trying to appear important. They are small, dependent, and aware of their need for help.
Likewise, a true believer recognizes spiritual poverty and dependence upon God.
📖 Matthew 5:3
“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Pride says:
• “I know enough.”
• “I am strong.”
• “I deserve recognition.”
Humility says:
• “Lord, I need You.”
• “Without Christ I can do nothing.”
• “Teach me Your ways.”
The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who realize their complete dependence upon God.
🙏 2. Simple Faith and Trust
A healthy child naturally trusts a loving parent. In the same way, God desires His people to trust Him sincerely.
📖 Proverbs 3:5
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Many people struggle spiritually because they rely entirely upon human wisdom, intellect, or self-confidence. Childlike faith does not mean blind ignorance—it means trusting the goodness and wisdom of God even when we do not fully understand everything.
Faith says:
• “God knows what is best.”
• “His promises are true.”
• “I will follow Him even when the path is difficult.”
🪞 The Danger of Pride and Self-Exaltation
The disciples’ question revealed a hidden problem within the human heart: the desire to be greater than others.
Pride was the original sin of Lucifer.
📖 Isaiah 14:13–14
“I will exalt my throne… I will be like the most High.”
Pride constantly seeks:
• recognition
• praise
• superiority
• control
• attention
• personal glory
Even in religious life, pride can hide beneath outward spirituality. A person may desire to appear holy, knowledgeable, or important before others.
But Jesus teaches that heaven operates by the opposite spirit.
📖 Luke 14:11
“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
The closer a person comes to Christ, the more humble they become. True holiness does not produce arrogance—it produces meekness, kindness, patience, and mercy.
✨ Jesus Himself Is the Perfect Example
Jesus did not merely teach humility—He lived it perfectly.
📖 Philippians 2:5–8
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus… He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
The Creator of heaven came as a servant.
The King washed the feet of His disciples.
The Holy One associated with the weak, poor, and broken.
True greatness is not found in lifting ourselves above others, but in lowering ourselves to serve others in love.

🛠️ Practical Steps to Develop Childlike Humility
📖 1. Spend Time Daily With God
Prayer and meditation upon God’s Word soften the heart and remind us of our dependence upon Him.
📖 John 15:5
“Without Me ye can do nothing.”
The more we behold Christ, the less we exalt self.
Practical habits:
• Begin the day with prayer
• Read Scripture with a teachable spirit
• Ask God to reveal hidden pride
• Thank Him continually for His mercy
🤲 2. Learn to Serve Quietly
Humility grows through service.
Do good without needing recognition:
• help someone privately
• encourage the discouraged
• serve your family faithfully
• support others without seeking praise
📖 Matthew 6:3
“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”
Heaven notices what the world ignores.
💬 3. Be Teachable
Childlike humility is willing to learn, receive correction, and admit mistakes.
A proud heart resists correction.
A humble heart says:
• “Thank you for showing me.”
• “I may be wrong.”
• “Lord, teach me more.”
📖 Proverbs 9:9
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser.”
❤️ 4. Stop Comparing Yourself With Others
Comparison feeds pride, jealousy, discouragement, and competition.
The disciples were comparing themselves, asking who would be greatest. Jesus redirected their attention away from competition and toward humility.
Instead of asking:
• “Am I greater than others?”
Ask:
• “Am I closer to Christ?”
• “Am I becoming more loving and humble?”
🕊️ 5. Depend Upon God in Everything
Children know they need help. Spiritually, we must live with the same attitude.
📖 Psalm 62:8
“Trust in Him at all times.”
God allows trials partly to teach us dependence upon Him rather than confidence in ourselves.
When we become weak in self, we become stronger in Christ.
📖 2 Corinthians 12:9
“My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
👑 The Greatest in Heaven
The world admires wealth, fame, beauty, power, and influence. But heaven values something entirely different.
The greatest person in God’s kingdom is not the most self-exalting, but the most humble. Not the one seeking position, but the one surrendered to God. Not the loudest voice, but the purest heart.
Childlike humility is powerful because it reflects the very spirit of Christ Himself.
May we daily pray:
🙏 “Lord, remove pride from my heart. Teach me to trust You, depend upon You, and walk in the humble spirit of Christ. Help me become like a little child in faith, purity, and love.”
