Psalm 84

Psalm 84 celebrates the beauty of dwelling in God's presence, portraying a longing for His house and the blessings of trusting in Him. It reflects a deep yearning for intimacy with God, emphasizing the joy and strength found in His courts. The psalm also conveys the idea that those who dwell with God experience continual strength, protection, and blessings.

Psalm 84:1-4 (NKJV)
1 How lovely is Your tabernacle,
O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, even faints
For the courts of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
And the swallow a nest for herself,
Where she may lay her young—
Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts,
My King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;
They will still be praising You. Selah

The psalmist expresses an intense longing for God's presence, describing the beauty of God’s tabernacle. This longing is not just spiritual but physical, as both heart and flesh yearn for communion with God. Even birds find rest near God's altar, symbolizing that God's presence offers refuge and security to all. Those who live in God’s house are constantly blessed, finding joy in worship.

Psalm 84:5-7 (NKJV)
5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength;
Each one appears before God in Zion.

Blessed are those who draw their strength from God and are determined to pursue Him, depicted here as a pilgrimage. Even in difficult places like the Valley of Baca (a place of weeping), God’s presence brings transformation, turning trials into blessings. Their journey with God is one of continual renewal, growing stronger until they reach Zion, the place of God's presence.

Psalm 84:8-9 (NKJV)
8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
Give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah
9 O God, behold our shield,
And look upon the face of Your anointed.

The psalmist shifts to a prayer, asking God to listen and to look favorably upon His anointed one (likely referring to the king or spiritual leader). The term "shield" symbolizes protection, suggesting the need for God’s favor and guidance for the one who leads His people.

Psalm 84:10-12 (NKJV)
10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
The Lord will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Spending even one day in God's presence is far more valuable than a lifetime elsewhere. The psalmist would prefer a lowly position in God's house over living comfortably in wickedness. God is both a sun, providing light and life, and a shield, offering protection. He blesses those who live with integrity, withholding nothing good from them. The psalm concludes with a declaration that those who trust in God are truly blessed.
