Psalm 48
Psalm 48 is a celebration of God’s presence in Jerusalem, describing the greatness of God and the beauty of Mount Zion. It reflects both the security that God provides for His people and the joy they experience through His divine protection. The psalm portrays God as the defender of Jerusalem, a city that serves as a symbol of His reign, and calls people to reflect on His enduring faithfulness.
Psalm 48:1-3 (NKJV)
1 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
In the city of our God,
In His holy mountain.
2 Beautiful in elevation,
The joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north,
The city of the great King.
3 God is in her palaces;
He is known as her refuge.
The psalm opens by proclaiming God's greatness and the honor He receives in Jerusalem, described as the "city of our God." Mount Zion, which symbolizes God's dwelling, is depicted as beautiful and a source of joy for the entire world. It highlights that God’s presence gives the city its strength and beauty, making Him a known refuge for His people.
Psalm 48:4-8 (NKJV)
4 For behold, the kings assembled,
They passed by together.
5 They saw it, and so they marveled;
They were troubled, they hastened away.
6 Fear took hold of them there,
And pain, as of a woman in birth pangs,
7 As when You break the ships of Tarshish
With an east wind.
8 As we have heard,
So we have seen
In the city of the Lord of hosts,
In the city of our God:
God will establish it forever. Selah
This section reflects on the futility of earthly rulers who assemble against God's city. When they encounter the reality of God's presence, they are struck with fear and retreat in haste. The comparison to ships destroyed by a sudden east wind emphasizes how God’s power can instantly disrupt the plans of the mighty. The psalmists affirm that the stories of God’s deliverance are confirmed by what they themselves have witnessed, and they express confidence that God will secure Jerusalem forever.
Psalm 48:9-11 (NKJV)
9 We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness,
In the midst of Your temple.
10 According to Your name, O God,
So is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount Zion rejoice,
Let the daughters of Judah be glad,
Because of Your judgments.
In the temple, the people meditate on God's lovingkindness, reflecting on His faithfulness and justice. God's righteousness is displayed through His actions, and His name is praised throughout the earth. As a result, the people of Judah rejoice, knowing that God’s judgments are always right and good. This celebration emphasizes that God’s justice brings joy and security to His people.
Psalm 48:12-14 (NKJV)
12 Walk about Zion,
And go all around her.
Count her towers;
13 Mark well her bulwarks;
Consider her palaces;
That you may tell it to the generation following.
14 For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
He will be our guide
Even to death.
The psalm concludes with an invitation to explore and reflect on the strength of Zion, representing the city’s physical and spiritual security. By counting its towers and observing its defenses, future generations can be reminded of God’s faithfulness. The final verse affirms that God is not only the protector of His people but also their eternal guide, leading them throughout life and even into death.
