Psalm 133
Psalm 133 is a short but powerful chapter, celebrating the beauty and unity among believers. This Psalm, traditionally attributed to David, reflects the blessings that come when God’s people dwell together in harmony. The imagery used is vivid, likening unity to the precious oil used in anointing and the refreshing dew that sustains life. It also reminds us that God bestows His blessings, including life everlasting, on those who live in peace with one another.
Psalm 133:1 (NKJV)
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Unity among God’s people is not just beneficial, but it is also pleasing to God. It creates an atmosphere of peace and fellowship, which is both good for spiritual growth and delightful for those involved. This harmony is a reflection of God’s love and fosters an environment where blessings can flourish.
Psalm 133:2 (NKJV)
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments.
David compares unity to the anointing oil used on Aaron, the high priest. This oil was sacred and signified God’s consecration. Just as the oil flowed down, covering Aaron, so does unity spread goodness and holiness through the community. It’s a symbol of God’s favor and the spiritual richness that comes from unity.
Psalm 133:3 (NKJV)
3 It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forevermore.
Mount Hermon, known for its abundant dew, represents refreshment and life. Unity is like this dew, bringing spiritual nourishment and vitality to God’s people. Zion, representing God’s dwelling place, is where His blessings flow. When believers are united, God commands His blessing, which includes eternal life. This unity is not only a source of joy on earth but also connected to the promise of life everlasting.
