Psalm 112
Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm, emphasizing the blessings that come upon those who fear the Lord and delight in His commandments. It portrays the godly person’s character, life, and influence, emphasizing how God’s blessings extend to both personal and community life. The chapter also contrasts the peace and stability of the righteous with the frustration of the wicked.
Psalm 112:1-3 (NKJV)
1 Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
Who delights greatly in His commandments.
2 His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches will be in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
Those who fear God and find joy in obeying His commandments are richly blessed. Their influence extends beyond their lifetime through their descendants, who are described as being strong and honored. Material blessings such as wealth are mentioned, but the greater focus is on enduring righteousness, which speaks of integrity and faithfulness over time.
Psalm 112:4-6 (NKJV)
4 Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness;
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5 A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he will never be shaken;
The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
In times of trouble, the righteous experience God’s light and guidance. Their compassion and generosity set them apart, as they willingly help others and manage their own lives with wisdom. This steady and consistent lifestyle ensures that they will not easily be overcome by challenges, and their legacy will be remembered long after they are gone.
Psalm 112:7-9 (NKJV)
7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 His heart is established;
He will not be afraid,
Until he sees his desire upon his enemies.
9 He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever;
His horn will be exalted with honor.
The righteous are not fearful of bad news because their trust in the Lord keeps them secure. Their hearts are anchored in faith, and they face adversity with confidence. Their generosity toward the needy reflects a life of lasting righteousness, and God honors them by lifting them up, giving them dignity and respect in the eyes of others.
Psalm 112:10 (NKJV)
10 The wicked will see it and be grieved;
He will gnash his teeth and melt away;
The desire of the wicked shall perish.
The prosperity and honor of the righteous become a source of frustration for the wicked. The wicked person, filled with envy, sees the blessings of the godly but cannot stop them. Their ambitions ultimately fail, highlighting the contrast between a life built on God’s principles and one opposed to Him.
