Job 41
Job 41 introduces Leviathan, a mighty and terrifying sea creature, as part of God’s continued response to Job. The chapter focuses on describing Leviathan’s overwhelming power, fearsome appearance, and invincibility. Through this description, God emphasizes His own unmatched strength and wisdom, contrasting it with human frailty. Leviathan is portrayed as untouchable and unconquerable by humans, reminding Job of his limited power and understanding compared to God's.
Job 41:1-5 (NKJV)
1 “Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook,
Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower?
2 Can you put a reed through his nose,
Or pierce his jaw with a hook?
3 Will he make many supplications to you?
Will he speak softly to you?
4 Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?
5 Will you play with him as with a bird,
Or will you leash him for your maidens?"
God begins by challenging Job with questions about Leviathan, a powerful creature. These rhetorical questions emphasize Leviathan’s untamable nature, showing that no human can capture or control him. Leviathan will not submit or plead to humans, nor can he be made into a servant or pet. This highlights human limitations in dealing with such mighty forces of nature.
Job 41:6-11 (NKJV)
6 “Will your companions make a banquet of him?
Will they apportion him among the merchants?
7 Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
8 Lay your hand on him;
Remember the battle—
Never do it again!
9 Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false;
Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him?
10 No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up.
Who then is able to stand against Me?
11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him?
Everything under heaven is Mine."
God continues by showing that Leviathan is too dangerous to be hunted, sold, or distributed among traders. Even attempting to catch him with weapons would result in failure, and anyone who tries would regret it. The futility of overpowering Leviathan leads to a critical point: if no one can stand against this creature, how much more difficult it is to stand against God, the Creator of all.
Job 41:12-17 (NKJV)
12 “I will not conceal his limbs,
His mighty power, or his graceful proportions.
13 Who can remove his outer coat?
Who can approach him with a double bridle?
14 Who can open the doors of his face,
With his terrible teeth all around?
15 His rows of scales are his pride,
Shut up tightly as with a seal;
16 One is so near another
That no air can come between them;
17 They are joined one to another,
They stick together and cannot be parted."
God details Leviathan’s physical characteristics, emphasizing his impenetrable scales and powerful build. His tightly packed scales make him impervious to attack, and his terrible teeth inspire fear. This description further magnifies the impossibility of humans overcoming such a beast, showcasing Leviathan's untouchable defense and invulnerability.
Job 41:18-21 (NKJV)
18 “His sneezings flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lights;
Sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke goes out of his nostrils,
As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
21 His breath kindles coals,
And a flame goes out of his mouth."
Here, Leviathan is depicted as almost a mythical, fire-breathing creature. The imagery of sparks, fire, and smoke coming from his mouth and nostrils adds to his terrifying appearance. This fiery description emphasizes Leviathan’s untamable nature and serves as a further demonstration of God’s mastery over even the most fearsome creatures.
Job 41:22-25 (NKJV)
22 “Strength dwells in his neck,
And sorrow dances before him.
23 The folds of his flesh are joined together;
They are firm on him and cannot be moved.
24 His heart is as hard as stone,
Even as hard as the lower millstone.
25 When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid;
Because of his crashings they are beside themselves."
Leviathan’s physical strength is further described, with particular emphasis on his neck and heart. His tightly joined flesh and rock-hard heart symbolize his resilience. Even the strongest and bravest are terrified when Leviathan stirs, illustrating how his sheer presence induces fear and awe in all who encounter him.
Job 41:26-29 (NKJV)
26 “Though the sword reaches him, it cannot avail;
Nor does spear, dart, or javelin.
27 He regards iron as straw,
And bronze as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee;
Slingstones become like stubble to him.
29 Darts are regarded as straw;
He laughs at the threat of javelins."
Leviathan is impervious to human weapons. Swords, spears, darts, and arrows have no effect on him. Even materials as strong as iron and bronze are worthless against his might. Leviathan is so powerful that he mocks any attempt to harm him, showing the futility of human efforts to control or defeat such a creature.
Job 41:30-34 (NKJV)
30 “His undersides are like sharp potsherds;
He spreads pointed marks in the mire.
31 He makes the deep boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 He leaves a shining wake behind him;
One would think the deep had white hair.
33 On earth there is nothing like him,
Which is made without fear.
34 He beholds every high thing;
He is king over all the children of pride."
Leviathan’s movements leave lasting marks in his environment. His powerful presence churns the sea, creating boiling waters and a bright wake. The conclusion is clear: there is no creature on earth like him, who is without fear and rules over the proud. Leviathan’s supremacy among creatures symbolizes God’s ultimate power, as even the most fearsome beings are part of His creation. This final note serves as a reminder of God’s unmatched sovereignty.
